The film is a sci-fi thriller that follows a high school science teacher named Elliot Moore (Mark Wahlberg), his wife Alma (Zooey Deschanel), and their friend’s daughter as they try to escape a sudden and catastrophic natural phenomenon.
​Out of nowhere, an unseen neurotoxin begins affecting the northeastern United States, causing people to experience sudden behavioral changes followed immediately by mass suicides. As society collapses rapidly and panic spreads nationwide, the group must navigate rural roads and avoid infected areas, eventually discovering that nature itself—specifically plants and trees—has developed a defense mechanism to eliminate humanity as a threat.
