ββIβM NOT HUNGRY, SWEETHEART.β
βGrowing up, I always believed my mom hated cheeseburgers. Every Friday night, she would stop at the little diner near our apartment in Ohio and buy one burger, one order of fries, and a small chocolate milkshake. Then she’d place everything in front of me.
βArenβt you eating, Mom?β I would ask. She always smiled. βIβm not hungry, sweetheart.β And because I was a kid, I believed her.
βYears passed. I graduated from college, found a good job, got married, and became a mother myself. One evening, my eight-year-old daughter and I stopped at that same diner while visiting Mom. My daughter ordered a cheeseburger, cut it in half, and pushed one piece toward me. βYou can have this half, Mom. I know you said youβre not hungry, but you barely ate lunch.β I froze.
βSuddenly, I was seven years old again, watching my mother sit across from me in that diner while I ate and she slowly sipped a glass of water. For the first time, I understood. My mom didn’t hate cheeseburgers. She was hungry. She simply couldn’t afford two meals.
βThe next morning, I went to her house. βMom,β I whispered, βwhy didn’t you ever tell me you went hungry so I could eat?β She became quiet, then smiled the same smile she’d given me all those years ago. βBecause you were my little girl. You weren’t supposed to worry about whether we had enough. That was my job.β
βI hugged her tighter than I had in years, tears streaming down my face as I finally saw the depth of the invisible armor she had worn for me. That weekend, I brought home a table loaded with all her favorite foods, and as we sat together sharing a meal on equal terms, I gently wiped her tears and whispered, “Now it’s my turn to take care of you, Mom.”
βSometimes the greatest sacrifices are the ones children never notice until they have lived enough of life to understand them. So if your parents are still here, hold them a little closer, sit with them a little longer, and let them know that their endless love was never taken for grantedβbecause one day, you will finally understand every silent storm they weathered just to keep the sun shining on you.
