The Price of Entitlement
My brother-in-law borrowed my brand new crossover, turned it into a mess, and REFUSED to pay for the cleaning — that same evening, he called me screaming: “How dare you?”
My husband’s brother, Jake, had always been quite bold. All his brother had, Jake wanted too. Their parents had given up, and my husband really wanted Jake to take responsibility, so he often turned a blind eye to his behavior.
For three years, my husband and I saved up to buy a new car. We dreamed of having a beautiful crossover. Finally, we bought it.
Jake came right away, examined the car, and asked:
“Can I borrow it? I’m going to a party tonight and I’d like everyone to be speechless.”
I immediately replied:
“But it’s not your car… I don’t agree.”
Then my husband came out and said:
“Sweetheart, why are you reacting like this? We always show something new to the family, right?”
Jake quickly added:
“We’re family. Everything that’s yours is also mine. I’ll take care of it and bring the car back tomorrow, I promise you.”
I didn’t like this idea. But I agreed because my husband asked me to.
When Jake arrived in the driveway the next morning, I STOOD THERE STUNNED.
The car was VERY DIRTY.
The interior had become a complete mess. Drunk drinks and sodas were spilled all over the white upholstery. There were snack wrappers and cans everywhere. Dirty footprints covered the carpet, as if everyone had gotten in without cleaning their shoes.
I shouted:
“WHAT IS THIS?”
Jake simply shrugged and replied:
“It’s just a car. Why are you getting so worked up? My friends and I have been driving around the city.”
I immediately told him he should pay for the full cleaning, but he insisted that he wouldn’t give a single cent because “HE DIDN’T DO ANYTHING SERIOUS.”
I was very surprised.
I had reached my limit. It was time for Jake to take responsibility.
I contacted a certain place, placed an order in Jake’s name, and asked them to deliver SOMETHING to his apartment.
That evening, he called me screaming:
“No! It’s not possible! How dare you?!”
I held the phone a few inches from my ear, the sound of commotion in his apartment echoing loud and clear.
“What are you talking about?” I asked calmly, keeping my voice level as I stood by the kitchen window.
“My entire living room is blocked!” he bellowed. “There are men in uniforms outside, and they won’t stop carrying massive barrels of industrial-grade heavy-duty degreasers, upholstery shampoo machines, commercial vacuums, and carpet steamers inside! The bill is over two thousand dollars, and they are demanding Cash on Delivery right now!”
I took a slow sip of my coffee, looking out at our ruined crossover sitting in the driveway.
“Well, Jake,” I said, letting every word sink in. “You said yourself that everything of mine is yours, and that you’d take care of it. Since you didn’t think ruining my car’s white upholstery was anything serious, I figured you wouldn’t mind having the exact professional cleaning gear delivered straight to your door so you could scrub out the mess yourself. After all, family helps family, right?”
On the other end, there was a heavy, suffocating silence. Even my husband, who had just walked into the kitchen and overheard my side of the conversation, stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes widening as the reality of what his brother had done—and what I had just done in return—finally hit him.
Jake stammered, sputtering insults and threats, but the click of my phone ending the call cut him off completely. My husband didn’t say a single word in defense of his brother this time. He just looked at the dirty car outside, then back at me, and finally nodded slowly in agreement.
The lesson was learned, the steep bill was his to handle, and for the first time in years, strict boundaries were firmly set where they belonged.
